There is an assumption that if you receive a booster shot (Third shot), antibodies can increase to some extent incapacitating the new mutant, Omicron.

Pfizer, an American pharmaceutical company that developed the COVID-19 vaccine, and German BioNTech confirmed on the 8th of December that their booster shot has a preventive effect from Omicron.

This was confirmed by conducting an experiment with the blood of an inoculator one month after receiving the third vaccine at Frankfurt University Hospital in Germany. After the third inoculation, antibodies that can neutralize a specific virus against the Omicron mutation were produced 25 times higher than when vaccinated.

They stated that in this experiment, Omicron mutation was found to be significantly reduced by the neutralizing antibody effect in two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. This is almost consistent with the results of a study published the day before by the African Health Research Institute (AHRI) in South Africa, where the omicron mutation first spread.

“It is clear that the third dose of our vaccine improves protection,” CEO of Pfizer, Albert Bulla stated.

However, he explained that the results of this experimental analysis are based on synthetic copies of omicron mutations made in the laboratory, and additional test data on actual viruses are needed.

Meanwhile, Pfizer and BioNtech clarified that if a vaccine specialized for Omicron is needed, development can be completed by March next year. The two companies added that even if a separate vaccine for Omicron is released, it will not interfere with the plan to produce 4 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine next year.
